Are recycling fees turning consumers away from electronics recycling?

Electronic waste in Toronto is nearly everywhere, and comes in a myriad of different forms. Obsolete mobile phones, outdated computers, broken electronic devices and many other electronics are being disposed of improperly in the trash, on the street and in local landfills. While there are a number of recycling options available, both through electronics retailers and computer and electronic recycling facilities, this concept has not quite caught on yet and many people are scratching their heads as to why.

The problem may lay in the fact that most recycling programs require that nominal fees be paid in order for obsolete electronic items to be taken, and most consumers do not understand these fees or what they are meant for.

Most consumers who are considering recycling computers in Toronto may be turned off by the fact that they have to pay a fee to dispose of their outdated electronics. Why pay a fee, when it is just as easy to store obsolete electronics or to leave them on the street? If more Toronto residents understood what the recycling fee went to, they might be more inclined to recycle their electronics after all.

The reason why there is a proper way to go about computer or monitor disposal in Toronto is because many electronic devices contain potentially harmful substances like mercury or lead. These substances cannot simply be left to sit in landfills where they can have a negative impact on the environment. Instead, recycling facilities are trained and equipped to handle the proper disposal of these materials, and the proper recycling of other raw materials like glass and plastics. The recycling fee is simply a nominal charge that keeps these facilities in business, allowing them to protect the environment and to recycle and reuse many of the elements that go into the creation of new electronics from old.
